Over the decades, meatloaf has evolved into a quintessential American comfort food, often featured in family and diner-style meals.

Cultural Significance
Meatloaf is more than just a meal; it symbolizes home-cooked comfort. It's often associated with family gatherings and cozy meals, reflecting a sense of nostalgia and tradition in American kitchens. This turkey version continues that tradition with a healthier profile.
The Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 1⁄4 lbs ground turkey
- 1 onion, chopped
- 4 garlic cloves, chopped
- 8 oz mushrooms, trimmed and finely chopped
- 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire
- 7 Tbsp. Organic ketchup divided
- 2 Tbsp. olive oil
- 3⁄4 tsp. salt
- 1⁄2 tsp. black pepper
Directions
Step 1: Heat oven to 400° F. Lightly oil a rimmed baking sheet (or 9x13-inch baking pan) lined with aluminum foil.
Step 2: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the mushrooms, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1/4 tsp. Pepper. Cook until the mushrooms give off their liquid and boil away for 10 minutes.
Step 3: Transfer the onions and mushrooms to a large bowl, then stir in the Worcestershire sauce and 3 Tbsp. of the ketchup. Set aside to cool for 5 minutes.
Step 4: Combine the breadcrumbs and milk in a small bowl. Stir the breadcrumb mixture and the eggs into the mushrooms and onions. Using a fork or your hands, gently mix in the turkey, 1/4 tsp. of salt, and 1/4 tsp. of pepper. The mixture will be very wet.
Step 5: Form the meatloaf into a 9x5-inch oval in the middle of the prepared baking sheet. Spread the remaining 4 Tbsp. of ketchup on top.
Step 6: Bake the meatloaf until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part registers 170° F for about 50 minutes. Let stand for 5 minutes before slicing.
This Turkey Meatloaf is a delightful way to enjoy a lighter version of a classic dish. Serve it with mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables for a complete meal that brings comfort and satisfaction to any dinner table.
